STOMP ON THE SYSTEM [2] // WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER

2020

These to works were exhibited together in Werden, a socially informed exhibition exploring the theme of change, held at Darebin Art Centre, March 2020. stomp on the system [2] is a self reflection. The boot is a representation of power. How, in my experience, a traditionally combative item of clothing has been both self-actualising and oppressive. An item that once brought me personal empowerment, and was closely interwoven with my self identification, was, in a later episode of my life, co-opted by structural institutions that monopolise the use of force. The boot became a representation of injustice, as well as a source of trauma. This dichotomous relationship between forms of power, my power of becoming and transformation into myself with the imposition of unjust institutional force, cannot be reconciled. I wear slides these days.

we are stronger together pulls these thoughts into a community setting. A mural-like work in a community art gallery, under the eyes of many. The only way to solve the distress of misused power is to bring these experiences into the light. To share and to create space, to collectively reject injustices. To fight together and resist.
